Why do people take Alexander Lessons?
Lessons in the Alexander Technique help students to achieve greater health and energy in their everyday activities, careers, and other personal challenges.

What is the role of an Alexander teacher?
Through the teacher's gentle hands-on direction, students learn to notice and consciously change how they use their bodies in a healthful manner.

How does an Alexander teacher apply the Technique? Alexander teachers guide the student through general movements that affect their everyday lives. Lessons may include relearning ordinary but complex tasks, such as standing up and sitting. Many teachers also use "lying down" work. The teacher may also help apply the technique to singing, sports, or a particular area of interest.

How many lessons do people take?
The amount of lessons people take can vary widely. A basic rule of thumb is that many people can begin to use what they have learned after 6-10 lessons. The greatest benefit generally occurs over the course of 30-40 lessons over several months or more.

What factors determine how many lessons I will need?
The number of lessons any individual requires often depends on the student's purpose and how quickly they learn.

What can I achieve through short-term study?
Some students require only a few lessons, plus some additional maintenance lessons to alleviate physical discomfort.

What are some of the common reasons for a longer course of study?

Health: Some students with chronic back pain or other ongoing conditions find that a longer course of study can help them achieve life-long improvement.

Performance enhancement: Performers, musicians, athletes, and others studying pursuits with high demands upon the body often gain the most from long-term study.

What are the most common benefits?

Better integration of thoughts, emotions, and movements for greater life balance.

"Each lesson carries the process somewhat further and confirms in the most intimate and convincing fashion the claims that are made. As one goes on, new areas are opened, new possibilities are seen and then realized; one finds himself continually growing and realizes that there is an endless process of growth initiated."

John Dewey
